Scottish League Cup Final

Inverness Ladies clinched the Scottish League Cup amidst scenes of great jubilation at McDiarmid Park last weekend. Cheered on by a large and noisy support the women were determined there would be no repeat of the heartache suffered in the final of two years ago when they were beaten in extra time. After a fairly cagey start from both sides Leanne Calder was fouled some 25 yards from goal in the 14th minute and left back Claire Masterton stepped up and blasted the free kick high into the net for a spectacular opening goal. Lorraine Cadden and Sarah Main both came close to adding to the lead but the Highland side had keeper Kim Jappy to thank for a couple of good saves as Clyde chased an equaliser. The second half saw Inverness begin to dominate with Cadden and Main creating havoc on the flanks and Karen Mason charging through the middle with Calder’s trickery on the ball saw Clyde on the back foot for long spells. The second goal came on 65mins when Calder beat the keeper with another blistering strike and the cup was secured with 8mins left when Calder swept home another perfect Cadden cross. Leanne Calder won the player of the match award but the entire Inverness team played their part in a well deserved victory.

A delighted team coach Sandy Corcoran said “I am really pleased for the players, all 17 of them have played their part in this cup success and my assistant Louise Cadden and myself cannot praise them highly enough for such a professional performance. We would both like to thank the large travelling support for their backing on the day."
